Four of AAP's photographers - Dan Peled, Dan Himbrechts, Daniel Pockett, and Craig Golding - are finalists in the inaugural Women in Sport Photo Action Awards #WISPAA.
AAP has five of the 15 images named as finalists in the professional section.
An iconic photo of AFLW star Tayla Harris kicking at goal is also one of the finalists.
Harris took a stand against online trolls after host AFL broadcaster Seven Network initially pulled down the image in response to the post attracting offensive comments.
Community outrage ensured the photo was reinstated and went viral as fans splashed it across homemade T-shirts and the women's league embraced it as an unofficial logo.
The #WISPAA photo awards are split into professional and amateur categories and the competition has been organised by Women's Sport Australia (WSA).
Top-ranked Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty, Matildas stars Sam Kerr and Lisa Da Vanna and Harris feature in the professional category.
"The images chosen to be #WISPAA finalists take you beyond the gender and the sport to the core of the athlete to reveal their power, skill, athleticism and passion," WSA media director Louise Evans said.
"They are beautiful, inspirational, gutsy images."
Award winners will be announced on May 30.
#WISPAA was launched by Women Sport Australia (WSA), the peak national advocacy body for women in sport.
The aim of #WISPAA is to showcase the skill, strength and athleticism of Australian sportswomen.
