Protests have engulfed several cities in the US and broken out across the world following the death of George Floyd, a black man killed in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week.
A bystander's video posted online on May 25 showed Floyd, 46, pleading with arresting officers that he couldn't breathe as one officer knelt on his neck. He soon became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead.
Along with the recent deaths of Georgia man Ahmaud Arbery and Louisville woman Breonna Taylor, the incident has renewed calls from the Black Lives Matter movement for justice for victims of police violence.
AAP picture researcher Kristen Daly selects a range of dramatic images that capture the chaos, confusion and collective anger on the ground. View these and more images of the protests in our gallery of standout shots.
