Who made the list? Most searched news images of 2017

The year 2017 is about to come to an end, and this year has seen incredible visual moments captured by the lenses of our photographers.

Being the top source of news imagery and video, search terms of AAP's visual library, AAP Photos, is a good indication of the news stories and topics that dominated conversations and the media in 2017. While many of the searches referred to political moments and natural disasters, AAP Photos did have a few surprise searches thrown in.

The surprise - Tony Abbott did not make the top 5 but...

Despite Tony Abbott not making the top 5 politician searches of the year, his mural did. One of the most searched images was the one of the mural of Tony Abbott depicting him with Cardinal George Pell AC.

Local residents react to a mural that has been painted over with black paint in Newtown, Sydney, November 17, 2017. The mural, created by street artist Scott Marsh, depicted former prime minister Tony Abbott and Cardinal George Pell involved in a sex act celebrating the same-sex marriage survey 'yes' result.
