AAP photographer Lukas Coch witnessed the historic moment when Australia legalised same-sex marriage. We asked him what led to that moment.
You can try and anticipate some shots, but there are 150 members in the House of Representatives and once the jubilation started everything happened at the same time and you need an open eye and mind.
There was a moment where gay MP Trent Zimmerman offered a rainbow flag to the Prime Minister but he decided not to wear it. This would have been an obvious and strong picture. But then you get surprised by a moment of joy and emotion that we did not anticipate when main same-sex marriage supporter Warren Entsch picked up Labor MP Linda Burney.
And that unexpected moment is the one he captured for everyone to remember for a long time. It is now being described as an iconic snapshot of the emotions inside Parliament House in a moment of jubilation after the billed passed.
"Warren Entsch was the strongest supporter of same-sex marriage and has campaigned for years to get it legalised. Linda Burney's story is heart-wrenching after her son Binni, who was gay, was found dead only about two months ago - and this was her first week back at work. Every time I saw her just days prior to the vote, I wondered how she could be so strong and be here. But I think this issue gave her the strength. It was great to see this moment of joy and lightness when Warren Entsch picked her up.”
