Capturing the dramatic moment in which two horses fell 100 metres from the finish during The Championships at Randwick has earned AAP photographer Simon Bullard an award for excellence.
The image won the Sports Photograph of the Year at the Kennedy Awards for journalism in Sydney on Friday night. Bullard had the extraordinary presence of mind to capture the spectacular accident as it unfolded at high speed.
Jockey Andrew Adkins was taken to hospital for precautionary tests after falling heavily from War Baron on April 13. Glyn Schofield aboard Persan was also dislodged but got straight to his feet and quickly went to Adkins' aid.
Neither horse was injured.
We are so very proud of Simon for his outstanding skill and congratulate him on this prestigious award.
